MVDC Actions - Week of 08/16/2026

Each year, the NH House meets to consider whether to override the Governor’s veto of key bills. To override a veto, two-thirds of the members present at the session must vote to do so.

Although normally held in September, this year’s session is scheduled for Wednesday, August 19th.

The governor vetoed dozens of bills. You can find the full list HERE.

Last week we decided to defer action until this week to allow time for some research. Here’s what we’ve learned. With one exception, it’s unlikely that our reps will vote this way, but:

We SUPPORT a vote to override the governor’s veto of these bills:

• HB1422 - relative to the time to petition for a new trial.

• HB2026 - relative to the state 10-year transportation improvement plan; relative to toll rate adjustments and periodic toll reviews for the New Hampshire turnpike system to support the 2027-2036 ten-year transportation plan; and relative to reconstruction of the Gregg Mill Road Bridge in the town of New Boston.

We OPPOSE a vote to override the governor’s veto of these bills:

• SB268, SB552, and HB1442 - three nearly identical bills, collectively known as “the bathroom bills.”

• SB434 - relative to regulation of public school materials. We fought hard for the “Book Ban” veto.

What can you do? You can contact our representatives and senator and share your thoughts. They are all likely to support overriding the veto of HB2026 and HB1422 since all voted for HB2026 and HB1422 passed both chambers unanimously. Sadly, they all voted for the four bills we opposed during the session, where we hope the Governor’s veto stands. They reportedly don’t have the votes. Let’s hope it’s true. :)

Dear Representative/Senator,

I am a voter in your district. With veto day scheduled for Wednesday, I’m writing to urge you to vote to override the Governor’s vetoes of HB 1422 and HB 2026.

HB 1422 is a modest, common-sense change that would give people in certain circumstances additional time to petition for a new trial—an important pathway for those seeking to remedy a wrongful conviction. The bill passed both chambers and deserves the opportunity to become law.

HB 2026 adopts the 2027–2036 ten-year transportation improvement plan and includes the reconstruction of the Gregg Mill Road Bridge in New Boston. This plan reflects years of transportation planning and public and legislative input. Allowing the veto to stand risks delaying important transportation investments and creating uncertainty around infrastructure projects that are important to New Hampshire’s future prosperity and competitiveness.

I am also writing to urge you to vote against overriding the Governor’s vetoes of SB 268, SB 552, HB 1442, and SB 434.

SB 268, SB 552, and HB 1442 are substantially similar bills concerning the classification of individuals based on biological sex. These bills seek to address a nonexistent problem, while creating significant questions about implementation, enforcement, privacy, and individual rights. Please do not override these vetoes.

SB 434 is similarly a solution in search of a problem. New Hampshire law already gives parents and legal guardians the ability to object to specific course materials they find objectionable and requires school districts to provide a process for doing so. Parents also have the right to opt their children out of health or sex education and other objectionable material.

Please keep the Legislature focused on the real problems facing New Hampshire residents and sustain the Governor’s vetoes of SB 268, SB 552, HB 1442, and SB 434.
