TUESDAY - OPPOSE

OPPOSE THESE THREE:

HB356 - enabling school districts to adopt partisan school district elections.

HB475 - relative to the reductions from the default budget for official ballot town meetings. NEW

Kent Street Coalition - HB 475 represents interference with local control and an effort to shrink government down to nearly nothing in accordance with Free State/Libertarian goals.

HB613 - relative to enabling local political subdivisions to vote and set a reduced default budget option. NEW

Kent Street Coalition - This is a complicated bill that, like HB 475 above, involves default budgets. Rep.Gilman explained that the bill was confusing and summed up the bottom line: “The minority of the committee questions that the purpose behind this bill is to decrease budgets every year and forces a race to the bottom. Cutting a community’s ability to provide services…, year after year by default, will see thriving communities die.”

THURSDAY - OPPOSE NEW

OPPOSE HB520

HB520 - relative to authorizing hearing officers of the department of education to issue subpoenas. NEW

From AFT-NH: “HB 520 enables the Commissioner of Education to have subpoena power. We have talked about this bill before and we remain concerned that the bill is open to abuse by the Commissioner, whether that is Frank Edelblut or someone else. A subpoena process that is ripe for abuse presents a myriad of problems and leaves educators vulnerable to witch hunts. This would seem conspiratorial if not for the evidence of such witch hunts over the last six years.”

1. Sign into (or stay signed into) the Senate Remote Testimony tool to voice your opposition.

Email Opportunities

From our friends at:

By Thursday May 15th

The Senate Election Law and Municipal Affairs Committee recommended AGAINST passing  HB 217 4-1. This bill requires absentee ballot voters to submit information demonstrating citizenship, age, domicile, and identity in order to qualify to vote, placing an undue burden on those who already struggle the most to cast their votes. It is unwarranted given the minimal levels of voter fraud, and would ultimately decrease voter turnout.

HB 217 is scheduled for a floor vote on Thursday, 5/15.

Email your Senator urge them to oppose HB 217, with pre-drafted language - feel free to personalize it further!

HB 67 is also scheduled for a Senate floor vote on 5/15. It received an overwhelmingly positive reception at its public hearing last week, and was recommended for passage by the Senate Election Law Committee 4-0. HB 67 offers a straightforward solution to ensure accessible voting systems are used consistently across all elections, guaranteeing that disabled voters can cast their ballots with dignity and in compliance with federal law. HB 67 is likely to pass, and we encourage you to click the link to thank the Senate Election Law and Municipal Affairs Committee for their support.

Provide Feedback

We are in the final moments of the BHTF feedback opportunity

The Blue Hampshire Task Force (BHTF) is a 360 degree evaluation of the NH election cycle charged with evaluating the coordination and strategy of previous campaigns.

It’s composed of activists, elected officials, and community leaders who were closely involved in the last election.

If you prefer a paper form or have a question, email taskforce@nhdp.org or call the NHDP at (603) 225-6899.

Reinstate the Librarian of Congress

President Trump has crossed another dangerous line by abruptly firing Dr. Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress.

This troubling and unprecedented action should alarm every American who values the independence of our cultural institutions and recognizes the role libraries play in a democratic society.

Dr. Hayden's dismissal is certainly not a personnel matter. The termination message gave no cause.

Support Academic Freedom

ACTION:

  1. Follow the link to review the letter to see if your college or university has signed onto it.

  2. If Yes - call or email to thank them!

  3. If No - call or email to urge them to take a stand for academic freedom and urge your alum networks to do the same.

  4. If you asked last week and they still haven’t signed - Ask them why!

Molly Finnegan of PBS News reports’ “Hundreds of college presidents and other officials have signed a letter protesting the “unprecedented government overreach and political interference” that higher education is facing under the Trump administration.

IT’S WORKING!!!

When we first posted this on 4/27, there were just over 500 signatures, as of Friday, it was 624.
